IOM

The Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) is a major independent centre of scientific excellence in the fields of occupational and environmental health, hygiene and safety and has established a leading presence on chemical- and nanotechnology-risk issues through an international reputation in assessing the risk of small particles and fibres. IOM has expertise in hazard, exposure and risk assessment for workplace hazards, including nanomaterials and nanotechnology in support of regulation and industrial innovation.

Main activities and roles in SUNRISE

IOM has worked on method development projects for hazard, exposure and risk assessment of Nanomaterials, (notably ENPRA (lead), MARINA (lead), SUN, GUIDEnano, NANoREG, NanoReg2, GRACIOUS, PATROLS, NanoInformaTIX, Gov4Nano, BIORIMA(lead) among others), as well as industry-led innovation projects for the development of nano-enabled products (e.g. NanCore and NanoSafePack) and strategic innovation projects (i.e. NANOfutures PolyGraph, Electrograph, NanoMaster and NanoSynth) where we were WP lead for the health, safety and exposure assessment aspects. IOM has extensive expertise in data management, curation, and meeting principles of FAIR(findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability) data. Our experts have been involved in development of various data standardisation and harmonisation tools to facilitate the FAIRification, Open-access and Re-use of data by scientific community, industrial partners and other stakeholders. IOM’s expertise on data management will help access substantial data from past projects and will help in implementing and maintaining these data sources for SUNRISE project in FAIR format. IOM is currently partner of many ongoing nano safety related EU projects including SAbyNA, SBD4Nano, SUNSHINE; and AURORA which is specifically looking at the early life health effects of micro and nano plastics. Hence IOM’s experts will bring extensive knowledge and experience for the risk management of the new class of materials, and will play crucial role in the management and FAIR implementation strategy of the data in SUNRISE project.
